How it splits on the phone
The limits, plainly
GSM-7: 160 characters alone, 153 per segment once it splits. The 7 lost characters carry the reassembly header.
UCS-2: 70 characters alone, 67 per segment. One emoji or curly quote forces the whole message here, cutting your room by more than half.
Doubles: even in GSM-7, these each eat two characters: { } [ ] ~ ^ \ | € and a line break in some encoders.
Merge fields count when filled, not when written. A long first name can push a message onto a second segment for some contacts and not others.
